Day 42, Lincoln to Beatrice NE

62.4 miles today and 2291.3 overall

As Colin noted yesterday. We batten down the hatches before heading off to bed. Turns out that was the right thing to do as a thunderstorm came through Lincoln giving us a good soaking, a little bit of thunder and lightning but nothing our tents couldn’t handle. Colin missed the light show and the thunder because he fell asleep so fast.

We began the today in the land of Lincoln. Nebraska that is, big sky, large grain silos, a tall state capital building and a substantial network of bike paths.

Our camping spot was right next to a freeway cloverleaf, which was convenient and got us where we needed to go, but wasn’t the most quiet place to wake up to.

We left in the morning to resupply which required navigating the suburban roads, read four lane non-divided highways. Fortunately because of the good network of bike paths it wasn’t too much stress. We got what we needed and were able to hit the trail.

This is a beautiful bike trail

When you’re checking out a bike path, you want to look for one that has a crushed limestone surface which the city trails have as does the Homestead trail. The Homestead Trail goes south from Lincoln to Beatrice 30 miles It’s a beautifully built and maintained trail. The trail sits atop an old railroad grade. Along long stretches the forest has closed in over the years creating a cool and lovely path.

After heading down the trail a bit Colin was able to sniff out at Costco and we made a run for more energy bars and jerky. Costco‘s are our “go to” resupply for those two items because the prices they charge at convenience stores are high highway robbery without a gun. We did indulge in some sweets and maybe a overdid it but we got back on the trail and headed down toward Beatrice.

We had some adverse winds in the morning but after lunch an unexpected shift gave us a lift. In Beatrice we checked out the local brewery that made a fine IPA, Scotch ale and marionberry cider. We capped the day with dinner at Zo’s Soul Food Mississippi Burning The food was great, some highlights: Cajun chicken, fried catfish, frog legs, bean stew, fried okra and key lime pie. We’re fat and happy now heading for bed.
